Josephine Baker was one of a kind. She was very boyish in appearance and did nude things that were very ahead of the times. And because she was an American in Europe, her story offers an interesting comparison between European and American blacks.
To me, the most interesting aspect of her life is the way she tried to create her own world, adopting children of every different race to live together in a town that she more or less owned. Diana Ross, 1982
